FTP Your Files to a Server

If you know how to ftp then you should be able to ignore much of this page. Just know that you will need to ftp your files to the webstudy4.us server to a folder created by you just for you, so that I may view them. The configurations for that server are as follows:

hostname/address: webstudy.startlogic.com

username: multi

password: !student09

To view your files you will use the following url:

http://www.webstudy4.us/multi/yourfoldername/yourfilename.html

For example, you send a folder with the name PBassign10 and a file name of index2.html

The new url will be http://www.webstudy4.us/multi/PBassign10/index2.html

Please note: Send all files to the ftp server whether I request them or not. Also, you need to make sure that you have a good folder name so that know one person can overwrite your files. A good folder name would be firstnamemiddleintiallastnamesemesteryearassignment#. I for instance would use PLBAssign1FA09 (for Fall 09) for folder name.

If you do not know how to use ftp the following will help; however if you remain confused you may need to make an appointment to come and see me.

FTP Using the IE Browser

Using I.E. you can simply put ftp://www.webstudy4.us in the address bar and then use enter the username and password. The pasword is !student09

ftpusernamedialogbox

Once you see the directory of the server and can view all the folders and files I recommend that you use the Open the ftp site in windows explorer to allow for a simply drag and drop.

ftpdirectoryviewinwindowsexplorer

Here you can open up directories on your computer and drag and drop to the server directories.

FTP Your Files Using an FTP Program

There are many FTP programs available. Here is just an example of one of them. The settings for logging into the webstudy4.us server are as follows (this settings dialog box looks different for the different ftp programs and ftp interfaces for browsers):

The FTP program above is WS FTP LE.  This program is for use by students and instructors.  You can get this particular folder from me, the ICLC lab assistants or you can find your own ftp program. Then, work through a series of steps in order to get WS FTP LE running. Once you get the ftp folder, look inside at its files, next find the icon that looks like a plug and says ftp on it (most likely one of the last files). Double click this file to execute the program. Then use the following configurations to move you files over.

  The password is !student09

Put in that password, as well as the other configurations that you see in the picture above. Then click ok.

You will connect. The local machine is on the left (your computer) and the server is on the right. You can send folders or files to the server. I recommend making one folder so that you can send to the server with one keystroke. Highlight that folder on the left hand side and use the arrow pointing to the right to the server to move the folder.

See the above information again to view learn how to view your folders and files on the internet.

FTP Using Mozilla or other Browsers

Ftping in Mozilla is made easy if you download a plug-in for it. Usually you can do this using Mozilla if you use the tools menu and the add-on selection. Then, you can look up a ftp add on there. Then, download the add-on, install and restart Mozilla. Once installed, you should be able to access the add-on by going to the tools menu again and clicking on the ftp add-on selection. You will be asked for the settings, so see settings above in this webpage to complete the connection. The add-ons usually work just like a ftp program so if you have any issues look at the above ftp program to help get you started. Again, if you need help you may need to make and appointment with me or give me a call.

Hope this helps!!! :)
